Darwin cafes supporting the war on waste

Finally, a trending topic that doesn’t involve a chewbacca mask, nuggs or life hacks. The #WarOnWasteAU is here, thanks to ex-chaser host, Craig Reucassel, and his tram-load of takeaway cups and giant ball of plastic bags.

Here’s a couple of myths that we seriously need to bust.

Myth 1: “Coffee cups are recyclable.”

They’re made of cardboard, so they’ve got to be recyclable, right? Unfortunately not! Disposable coffee cups are lined with a protective plastic film that stops liquid from seeping through, so they can’t simply be recycled along with paper and cardboard. And in fact, it actually causes more harm than good because they can contaminate the whole load resulting in it all going straight to landfill. Some cities in Australia do have contracts with waste providers to combat this, but it’s yet to be fixed everywhere else. Better to eliminate the source of the issue.

And as for tea, two unrecyclable cups for one beverage? Well that’s just double the trouble…

Myth 2: “My takeaway coffee comes in a biodegradable cup, so I don’t need to worry.”

The idea sounds good: buy a coffee cup that is biodegradable, don’t contribute to landfill. There’s only one catch. Biodegradable cups don’t compost in normal compost. It takes very specific industrial composting conditions, which just isn’t widely supported.

Solution: Choose cafes that support the war on waste.

BYO coffee cup and save a buck; that’s the kind of philosophy supported by many cafes around Darwin. Here’s a round-up of cafes that have a commitment to waste reduction by selling, accepting or incentivising the use of keep cups or coffee mugs. Choose these cafes next time you need a coffee fix and ask anyone not yet following this philosophy to get on board!
